May 4th is International Firefighters Day. A day when we all pay tribute to the exceptional courage, extraordinary commitment, and selfless service exhibited every day by the men and women of the fire service.
International Firefighters’ Day is an opportunity for our shared community to recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to protect life and preserve property. Not only do we honour active firefighters, it is also an opportunity to remember the contributions of past firefighters – especially those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Firefighters Day became a worldwide celebration in 1999 when on January 4th of that year, a wildfire claimed the lives of five firefighters in Australia. Every year since then, we lose members of our community, either in the line of duty or beyond, but we never forget the legacy of their service.
Please take a moment to remember the firefighters who have died while serving our communities and celebrate those that currently dedicate their lives to protecting us all. More than ever, it is important that we show our support and appreciation to our firefighters and their families who support them, in the face of the dangerous but necessary work they do.
