The Township of North Stormont and GFL Environmental Inc. are pleased to announce having reached a finalized Agreement that governs various aspects of their relationship including disposal rates, contributions to infrastructure projects, and host community fees. The negotiated contract replaces the existing Agreement that has been in place for almost 20 years and is set to expire in late 2021.
The new 20-year agreement is a win/win for North Stormont and GFL with updated elements that better support the goals and vision of both parties, and includes a modernized and competitive compensation schedule that will be phased in over the next few years. Additionally, GFL is demonstrating their community commitment with $1.26M in community benefits that will be directed toward a new Community Centre in Moose Creek and Fire Equipment for Crysler and Finch fire stations.
Mayor Wert and members of council want to recognize the outstanding work of CAO Craig Calder and his team for their skillful navigation of the negotiation process with GFL. Marc Fox, a highly credentialed industry expert of 30 years hired by the municipality to review the contract on behalf of North Stormont, stated: “I think this is truly a win/win deal. The township will continue to benefit from the contributions of GFL to the community in terms of job creation, support to its infrastructure and local suppliers but directly to the Townships coffers in a material way as GFL recognizes the benefit it has realized from the growth, past, and future, experienced at the facility.”
Dave Richmond, Vice-President for Eastern Canada for GFL, expresses his pleasure on finalizing this agreement: “I am very pleased that the facility will continue to benefit from the Township’s partnership as it has in the past. I look forward to continue working with the Township in making this a first-class environmental facility.”
Beyond the immediate deal, GFL has also agreed to work collaboratively with the Township to advance economic development within the municipality and is constantly looking for new ways to shape the future vision of waste disposal and management in an environmentally progressive fashion.
